Life in Hawaii through the perspective of the plate lunch. The Plate Lunch as served by Honolulu Mark is a mixed plate metaphor for the way people, their stories and their food, come together on one plate to make Hawaii paradise. Honolulu Mark has returned home to his Hawaii roots but eats, shoots and leaves extend to my second home, Seattle.

Pic of the Day: Ahi Katsu Musubi
An iconic 16th-century Spanish novel has what to do with discount shopping in Hawaii? Honolulu does not have a Target store, yet. But it does have Don Quijote, the Japanese equivalent that has spread to Honolulu. (For friends back in Seattle, Don Quijote is part Uwajimaya, part Viet Wah, part Target and KMart.)
Don Quijote or, as they say in Japan, Donki, in my home town Kailua is a bright, loud store that is a one-stop for shoppers who need to get tofu with their bath towels. A quick bite was all that was needed here. The ahi katsu musubi was nestled among the bentos just a few aisles down from the laundry detergent.
