The inaugural Hawaii Rice Festival celebrated the islands' favorite staple with food, music, dancing and more food, especially rice, on Saturday, Sept. 11, 2010. Rice, rice baby. There, it had to be said, so I did.
I arrived in time to enjoy an ukulele jam followed by the "Riceipe" Cooking Competition. Five local chefs competed Iron Chef-style using the not-so-secret ingredient: rice.

The judges included Melissa Chang and Ed Morita from Nonstop Honolulu, and Nadine Kam from the Star-Advertiser. (Above, l. to r.) Riceipe judges Morita and Kam used both cameras and forks to digest their findings.
The winning dish: a seafood risotto by Hideaki "Santa" Miyoshi.
